The Charter Cities Institute is a rapidly growing nonprofit international research and development organization empowering new cities with better governance to lift tens of millions of people out of poverty. We are a cutting-edge organization, composed of researchers, communicators, international developers, partnership experts, and more, all dedicated to building the ecosystem for new cities with better laws.
Role Summary
The Graphic Designer will be part of the Communications Team and tasked with executing the visual aspects of a comprehensive communications strategy as outlined by the Head of Communications. This will include (but not be limited to): Print & Publication Design (i.e. both internal and external marketing collateral, in-depth research papers, books, one-pagers, annual reports, infographics, logos, event design support, etc.); Digital Design (social media images, presentation slides and decks, website graphics, newsletters, etc.); Multimedia Design (video and motion graphics creation); and other assignments that support the mission of the Charter Cities Institute. The organization and team are small but rapidly growing, so this list is not complete and our ideal Graphic Designer will need to be comfortable contributing to a wide variety of activities to advance our mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Media creation: Create social media posts, infographics, logos, and other items for use on existing and future CCI channels. Digital media experience (video editing, etc.) is a big plus and an important part of our communication plan.
• Brand Identity: expand and enhance CCI’s existing brand identity by creating a set of Brand Guidelines that can be replicated across the CCI website, social media channels, publications, newsletters, and more.
• External Communications & Publications: design layouts for in-depth research papers, including creation of custom cover art. Also, design newsletters using MailChimp, and create various public-facing communications materials including: one-pagers, presentation decks, reports, etc.
• Creativity: Keep up with the latest design trends across both print and digital, and apply them to your work when applicable. Be able to conceptualize complex topics and share them in a visually appealing, but meaningful way.
• Asset Management: Add to the existing graphic asset library and file management system, keeping all graphics files organized for easy access by team members. Work with the Digital Media Manager to ensure projects are scheduled and delivered in a timely manner.
• Collaboration: Work closely with the Head of Communications, Digital Media Manager, and internal teams to make necessary changes following feedback to ensure graphics are appealing and on-brand, and ultimately produce final designs.
Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a relevant subject preferred; design or other grad school training helpful.
• Experience: At least 4 years of professional design experience including both business-focused and artistic design. Experience in international development, public policy, or academia is a plus.
• Attitude and passion: An entrepreneurial attitude, willingness to independently identify solutions to new challenges, and intellectual curiosity are required.
• Skills and knowledge: Attention to detail, technical skills, proficiency with necessary software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, etc.), and excellent organization are required.
Expectations and Culture
The Charter Cities Institute greatly values our team culture. This position will ideally be hybrid (largely remote with some in-office availability) but fully remote candidates may be considered as well. We’re a small, very collaborative and intellectually curious team, so there are also occasional social activities (lunches, after-work outings, book club, etc) as well, and candidates should feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work.
Position Details
This is a full-time salaried position with a competitive compensation structure and excellent benefits (including health care, 401k, technology budget, etc.). Please apply on our website or send a cover letter, resume, and portfolio with relevant work samples (applications without all of these materials will not be considered) to careers@cci.city with the subject line “Graphic Designer”. We look forward to hearing from you.
